The model was trained on fMRI brain scan data from more than 700 healthy volunteers who watched movies, listened to podcasts, viewed images, and read text while inside a brain scanner.
Meta’s Fundamental AI Research (FAIR) team built Tribe V2 on top of the original TRIBE architecture — a model that won first place at the Algonauts 2025 brain modeling competition. The original version trained on low-resolution fMRI recordings from just four people. Tribe V2 scales that to over 700 subjects and delivers a 70x increase in spatial resolution, mapping approximately 70,000 brain voxels compared to around 1,000 in the earlier version, according to details shared on the model’s GitHub repository.
Meta released the model weights, codebase, research paper, and an interactive demo under a Creative Commons BY-NC (non-commercial) license. The model could genuinely benefit clinical researchers studying conditions like aphasia, sensory processing disorders, and other brain-related conditions. But Meta is not a neuroscience nonprofit. It is the largest social media advertising company on the planet. In 2025, Meta generated $200.97 billion in annual revenue, with advertising driving the overwhelming majority of that figure, according to Meta’s Q4 2025 earnings report. The company’s Family of Apps reached 3.58 billion daily active people. This means outside researchers can study and build on the model, but they can’t use it to sell products or services. Meta, however, retains full commercial rights to the underlying research, architecture, and any derivative technology it develops internally.

A company whose own engineering blog describes its ad recommendation system as a “brain.”
Meta just built a better one — a digital model of the actual human brain. And they released the research version for free while keeping the commercial possibilities entirely to themselves.
Tribe V2 may indeed transform neuroscience. But if it also transforms advertising, don’t say you weren’t warned.
