Meta Says GoodBye to Older Adults

When you think of Facebook, the social network that’s been around for two decades, it’s likely not young adults that come to mind as its core users. Meta, however, is determined to change this perception and is once again outlining its strategy to make the platform more appealing to this age group.

What Meta Executives are Doing

Tom Alison, who oversees the Facebook app at Meta, announced that the platform is shifting its focus more towards young adults. “While Facebook remains a space for everyone, we’re making substantial changes with the next generation of social media users in mind,” he wrote.

This isn’t a new endeavor for Meta. For years, executives have aimed to draw in more young adults to better compete with platforms like TikTok. Almost three years ago, Mark Zuckerberg declared that targeting young adults should be the company’s primary goal. Both Alison and Zuckerberg have emphasized the need to transform Facebook from a network centered on personal connections to one that prioritizes content discovery.

Meta’s new strategy, focusing on young adults and advanced AI recommendations, is set to significantly impact how users gain organic traffic on the platform, making it harder for non-marketers to reach their target audience without paid promotions. These changes emphasize discovery and content engagement over traditional personal connections. Meta’s New Focus

This transformation is now gaining momentum. Alison noted that advancements in AI have already enhanced content recommendations for Reels and the main feed. He also mentioned that “advanced recommendation technology will drive more products” in the coming year. Additionally, private sharing is on the rise, with more users sharing videos, though there was no update on the previously speculated reintegration of messaging into the main app.

Interestingly, Alison’s latest update omits any mention of the “metaverse,” a concept Zuckerberg once saw as crucial to the company’s future. Instead, the focus is on leveraging AI to innovate new product capabilities and attract younger users. This shift mirrors Meta and Zuckerberg’s recent efforts to frame some of their metaverse goals as advancements in AI.

Despite these efforts, it remains uncertain how effective Meta will be in capturing the young adult market. Alison reports “five quarters of healthy growth in young adult app usage in the US and Canada,” with 40 million young adult daily active users. However, this number is still relatively small compared to the 205 million daily active users Facebook reported in the US as of February, the last time it disclosed such figures.

Helpful Tip

Meta’s revamped strategy, emphasizing young adults and advanced AI recommendations, will greatly alter the way users achieve organic traffic, posing new challenges for non-marketers to connect with their audience without resorting to paid promotions. With a shift towards prioritizing discovery and content engagement over personal connections, these changes could disrupt traditional outreach methods.
